Dr. Ginger Seagraves, DVM (left) of the NEA Vet Clinic in Corning, Arkansas donated her vet services to PAWS in April altering twenty-six PAWS pets for free. The generous donation was to help place homeless pets at the Wal Mart fundraiser held that month and saved PAWS in excess of $2000. PAWS is extremely grateful and volunteers Judy & Marty Maurizi, Terry Mallot, Kristin Helton and Kourtney Lloyd transported the animals. Dr. Ginger along with her friendly staff of Andrea Luffman, Cheryl Edwards, and Kathy Jansen let the PAWS volunteers see her facility and shadow the surgical procedures she performed that day. Many people think the adoption fee at the PAWS shelter is like a donation but the fee just covers the cost of veterinary services that the animal requires. These vet services include spaying or neutering, heartworm testing, flea & tick preventative, vaccinations and worming. Dr. Archie Ryan, DVM of Southwest Drive Animal Clinic in Jonesboro has donated his services at a discounted rate and normally does all the PAWS procedures.

PAWS held it’s largest yearly fundraiser April 21st at the Paragould Wal Mart Supercenter. PAWS volunteers and junior volunteers helped eighteen shelter pets find permanent homes while raising $1515 for the non-profit animal shelter. Money raised will support the non-profit shelter and support the PAWS community programs, which include humane education in the local classrooms and a discount spay/neuter program. Wal Mart is anticipated to match up to $1000.

PAWS Receives Three Grants

From the EFGC

The Endowment Foundation of Greene County has awarded PAWS with three grants. The first grant for $725 is for a “Discount Spay/neuter Program”. This program will allow qualified low-income, disabled or elderly people in Greene County spay or neuter their pet for just $5. Anyone interested must fill out an application and be approved. For more information on how to apply for this program, call 240-0997 and leave a message with your name and address so an application may be sent.

The second grant was for $450 for the “PAWS to Love a Senior” program. This grant will assist six senior citizens on a fixed income adopt and enjoy a companion pet from the PAWS shelter for no charge and PAWS volunteers will assist the senior with pet transportation to the veterinarian or to a boarding/grooming facility. There are many studies that have documented the many physical and psychosocial benefits of pet ownership among the elderly. These benefits include lower blood pressure and decreased feelings of isolation and depression. If you know a senior citizen that would enjoy a companion pet please let them know about this special program.

The third grant for $1200 was to promote learning through the “PAWS Up for Learning” program. The program, founded by Susan Boyd, has canine humane educator “Henry Wrinkles” visit the children of Pam Lackeys third grade class at Greene County Tech Primary and encourage the children to read. Ms. Lackey reports the children are more interested in learning when “Henry Wrinkles” visits the class. On the day of the award presentation the Greene County Endowment Foundation members were honored with a a visit from the children along with a slide show and book reading about “Henry Wrinkles” that the children wrote. The presentation exhibited how this program has given them new enthusiasm to learn. The pilot program will be continued into the next year and the hopes is that other outside donations to the “Henry Wrinkles Foundation” will go into a scholarship fund for children in need.

Girl Scout Troop #115 presented PAWS with seventy-seven adoption packs as part of their “Junior Bronze Award Project.” The adoption packs included toys, food bowls, pet food and other pet items. PAWS used these packs at their yearly onsite fundraiser at the Paragould Wal Mart Super Center in April where over eighteen homeless pets were adopted.

The project was inspired when PAWS volunteers spoke to the troop about the importance of spaying and neutering and several of the girl scouts decided to use PAWS for the project. Some of them had even adopted pets from PAWS. The troop also came out to the non-profit shelter and helped bathe and socialize the animals and later prepared a book showing photos of their volunteer efforts along with a bio of each Girl Scout, their pet, and why they love them. The book was given to the volunteers at PAWS and many thanks to the troop for all their hard work to help the animals!

The Greene County Tech High School Dance Team had PAWS pets included in their fashion show in April. The gals sent a special card to thank the shelter volunteers and pets for being in the show. Thanks gals, two PAWS up!

Hello I adopted “David” on February 10, 2007….He is the best choice I have ever made, he is a wonderful dog. My two daughters age 3 and 5 just love him to death, and he is crazy about them also. My kids have even taken him to school for show and tell Everyone fell in love with him. His potty training is going awesome, he has only had a few accidents in the house, but that’s all to be expected. He was sick for a few days, had diarrhea and vomiting so I took him to the vet. He had an intestinal infection, so he had to have a shot and antibiotics for 7 days, so all together he had 4 shots that day counting his baby shots. Poor thing I felt so bad for him I have been talking to a few people about how to train him since this is my first dog ever… I told them I am just treating him just like I would my own children because that’s what he is like to me now…I told my husband he finally got that son he always wanted, because he is just like another child running around here, I actually think he is more work than my girls, but its all worth it. The young man that helped us the day we got him told me that y’all would love for me to send photos from time to time, so I am sending you one of him and the girls… they were playing dress up with him, putting there clothes on him, even wanted me to paint his nails…lol….I’m thinking about having some family portraits made soon and I am going to include him, when I get these done I will send one of those also. Oh yeah I also had to change his name the day we got him…ya’ll named him David, but that is my husbands name and I don’t think that would have worked out to well lol. so his name is now ”Duke” …ok I guess that’s enough babbling over my new baby LOL…. I just wanted to thank you all so much for everything you all do for all these animals… you are all angels.

“Ben” who we call “Nipper” is doing real well. Seems to be house broken and can sit, come and shake hands. Likes to go for walks and just now is learning about a ball. He definitely is a pure lab. His back dewclaws are gone. We are very happy with him. Thank you again. Beth and Jerry Earlywine, Stuttgart AR

Dear PAWS,

Thank you so much for the wonderful addition to our family. “Max” (Ralphie) was adopted on 4/7/2007. He has adjusted well and is a pure delight. He earned a place in our hearts in a short time. Mai Snow

Dear PAWS, “Sally” is beautiful! She has an appointment to see our vet tomorrow. We will send pictures and promise to take good care of her. Thank you for all you do to help animals like “Sally”.

Dear PAWS, “Sayde” has been doing wonderful. She has brightened up my life and home with her beautiful personality. I could never fully express my gratitude to you for allowing me to care for this amazing canine. She is as nice as can be, loves all other dogs, and is great with my nieces. She took housetraining wonderfully she had the routine down in just a couple weeks. She loves going for long walks with me out in the woods, car rides, and she really enjoys her squeaky tennis ball. We will continue to keep in touché, and I wish you all the best of luck with the other animals at the shelter. Thanks a bunch. Love, Samantha & “Sayde”

Just wanted to let you know that “Smokey” spent the weekend at the vet’s office a couple of weeks ago. He got neutered, bathed, nails clipped, ears cleaned, heartworm and fecal tested, rabies shot, and put on heartguard (after testing a very weak positive for heartworms), and started on frontline plus. I forgot to get a statement saying he was neutered, but the vet’s office said if you had a fax number they could fax it to you. If not, just let me know and I can swing by and pick up the statement and drop it in the mail. He is doing great, loves to sleep in the bed, he rides in the Kawasaki Mule when we feed the horses and cows, and sits up front in the truck seat everywhere I go. He is wonderful with all of my boys, and is great with our other dogs. Thanks a bunch! Ashley

Dear PAWS,

Please accept the enclosed gift in honor of “Montana” and his mom, Amanda. Amanda got “Montana” from PAWS about this time 3 years ago. This time last year “Montana” & Amanda had just finished grad school in Fayetteville and relocated to Jonesboro where momma took a job in Lawrence County as a social worker. On July 1 “Montana” & Amanda married Nathan Rowe. After graduating last August Nathan took a job with Dillard’s Corporate Office in Little Rock and Amanda’s job let her transfer to Searcy. Montana got a new house in Austin, AR with a big fenced in back yard. Next November Montana will be a big brother, Momma is going to have a baby. “Montana’s” has had to have two surgeries to remove spots of cancer but he’s doing well now. He loves to visit Granddaddy and go walking with him on the farm. “Montana” got a little heavy but Momma changed his work and helped him with exercise programs.

New Animal Ordinance

The proposed ordinance would require owners to have their dangerous animal confined indoors or in a pen on the owner’s property; to not allow the dangerous animal out without the animal being on a leash at least four feet in length; and owners of Pit Bulls or wolf-hybrids must acquire $100,000 worth of liability insurance.
According to the proposed ordinance, if a person complains to the city that an animal attacked him or her the Chief Animal Control Officer will investigate the matter. The owner may be asked to remove the animal from within the city limits. If the animal attacks again, the animal control officer will seize and impound the animal. Death of the animal may become a consequence if the seizing or impoundment of the animal is not possible without the risk of harm or death to the officer. Persons found guilty of violating the proposed ordinance would be convicted of a misdemeanor and fined no less than $200 for the first offense and no more than $1,000 for the third and subsequent offenses.

I take him on a walk in the neighborhood in the morning, go home and play with him at lunch and then we walk in the park after work. He likes the backyard, but I think he prefers to stay indoors. You all did a great job with him.
Hey PAWS, thought you might like to see a few pics a “Yogi Bear” (aka Twidgett) He is settling in very well. I have become his “person” He follows me everywhere. Alex (our 4 year old human child) loves him. She has always wanted a cat and because of Dad’s cat allergies has not been able to have one. “Yogi” has many cat qualities and loves the attention she gives him. He went to the vet today for neutering (ouch). The vet thinks he is between 6 and 7 months. He weighed 3.2 pounds. If he had been less than 3 pounds they would not have done the surgery. Just wanted to give you an update…Thanks for all you do!!!! Alan Jeter

Thanks, as I am really the lucky one! Donna McClure - Memphis, Tennessee

Just updating you on “Morgan” (f/n/a Precious). We adopted “Morgan” from Paws five years ago. We got her in November 2002. She is doing great. We still think she is the sweetest little girl. She lives here in Winnebago Illinois. We adopted a black lab from local county shelter in July of this year. She has always had other dogs here with her. When we lost our dear black lab Bo in March she was an only child for a few months. She likes having a big dog to boss. We love her dearly. She is very healthy and happy. Thanks for sending her our way.

We loved him so much and cannot understand how we could have let him get to us like he did. We still think of him and miss him. We can’t keep him under our circumstances. We will be happy if he gets a good home that loves him like we did. This may sound crazy to all of you. We can’t understand it either, I have checked on him twice and I really appreciate it that I can. We are not sure if we can come see him before he is adopted. It may hurt too much to let him go. Thanks ever so much. P.S. Your work and service is wonderful and appreciated by many I am sure. Thanks Again. Jerry & Alene Murphy

Hi, remember “Miss Ellie”, the beardie from this summer? Well, she found a home….ours LOL She has turned out to be a wonderful addition to the family. She did have some troubles at first. Her heartworm was more severe than we thought and had to undergo some extensive treatments. She made it through all of them and is doing great; the other beardies treat her as one of the family. Thank you again for contacting me about her and I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Take care - Don Schild

Dr. Steve Copeland, DVM
Honored By PAWS
PAWS recognized Dr. Steve Copeland, DVM of Veterinary Healthcare, Inc. for over seven years of participation in the “PAWS Discount Spay/Neuter Program”. PAWS Humane Educator “Henry Wrinkles” and PAWS volunteer Susan Boyd were on hand to deliver the plaque recognizing Dr. Copeland’s commitment in helping to curb the animal overpopulation problem.

According to PAWS President Laura Wood “this program offers low-income, disabled and elderly residents a discounted rate to get their pet spayed or neutered. Dr. Copeland’s clinic averages 10 to 15 procedures per month, putting a major impact on our community in terms of curbing unwanted offspring that might be born”. Wood continued “this program is very important because just because someone cannot afford to have their pet altered does not mean they don’t want to practice responsible pet ownership”.

So important that PAWS has been given grants by the Endowment Foundation of Greene County and the Martha Barber Animal Welfare Endowment of Little Rock to keep the program going. Wood says, “I really can’t stress enough how many thousands of offspring are hindered because of spaying and neutering. If everyone in this country altered their pet the need for humane societies and animal welfare organizations would cease to exist. It’s one of the most important community programs that PAWS offers. Not only does our animal shelter find homes for homeless pets but at PAWS we also strive to find solutions to the overpopulation crisis.”

Dr. Copeland wants to take his mission of caring one step further and is working with PAWS to complete an in-house surgical unit at the PAWS shelter, allowing other local area vets the opportunity to donate their veterinary services by altering PAWS pets. Wood says the average number of adoptions per month at the PAWS Shelter is about 60 and that 501c(3) humane societies are required by law to have adopted pets altered. Wood also says “this surgical unit is one of the most exciting plans we have going on, it will save us time and money in transporting animals and will take a lot of pressure off of the Southwest Drive Animal Clinic and Dr. Archie Ryan in Jonesboro who has done the procedures for PAWS for years.

Since being founded in 1998, the PAWS shelter has placed over three thousand animals into loving homes and has provided a safe-haven for homeless pets. If you are interested in adopting a pet, see our pets online at www.pawsparagould.org or come to the shelter to see your tax-deductible donations at work. PAWS is open Monday thru Saturday from noon till 6p.m. Donations may be mailed to PAWS 1103 E. Kingshighway, Paragould AR 72450. For more information on the shelter or the discount spay neuter program call (870) 240-0997.

Teleflora Honored for Roll Donations

Employees of Teleflora are fortunate to have a program called “Roll Giving” in which $1000 per employee is granted to a local non-profit organization. Since many Teleflora employees have adopted a pet or surrendered a pet to PAWS the shelter was chosen as their Roll Giving choice. Along with the $1000 grant that Roll donates Teleflora will also match up to $1000 of an employee’s donation. Since this program has started PAWS has received many donations from Teleflora and to show their appreciation “Henry Wrinkles” and PAWS volunteer Susan Boyd presented a plaque to Teleflora’s Human Resource Manager Hal Wyatt. Two spectacular PAWS up to Teleflora and their gracious employees, the donations have helped PAWS replace the heat and air unit at the shelter and fund many other shelter improvements.

PAWS Onsite at Kmart & Orsheln

At PAWS onsite at Kmart an excited adopter seems to have found her lost baby!

Kayleigh Workman was just one of many PAWS volunteers that helped with onsite adoptions in the month of July at Orsheln.

PAWS was onsite with pets for adoption at the Jonesboro Kmart in July then did another onsite fundraiser at Orsheln Farm & Home finding even more homeless pets homes! Money raised will support the non-profit shelter and support the PAWS community programs, which include humane education in the local classrooms and a discount spay/neuter program.

Martha Barber Grant
PAWS has been granted $300 from the Martha Barber Animal Welfare Endowment. The grant was give to help support the discount spay/neuter program offered to low-income, disabled and elderly residents. If you know of someone who would like to qualify for the program call the PAWS shelter at 240-0997 to request an application via mail or email us at paws@grnco.net.

Hi, here are recent pictures of “Tuffy”. My husband with “Tuffy” and “Missy” on our swing. We adopted “Tuffy” in 2005….she only weighed 1-1/2 lbs at that time but even then we realized that she was definitely TOUGH…hence the name “Tuffy”. She is the little one that we sent you pictures of peeing on the keyboard. She has been such a wonderful addition to our family.

Forrest & Jack Cook - Greenway, AR

Hello from Linda Pender and “Candy” the cat, adopted September 2006 from PAWS and living happily in Kennett, Missouri!
